Menopause Counseling in San Rafael, CA

Perimenopause and menopause support for the emotional, mental, and spiritual shifts of midlife.

Are you standing at the crossroads of midlife, questioning, "Is this all there is?" "Is this only about managing symptoms?" "Am I destined to lose my vitality and value as a woman?" If you're a woman navigating the intricate dance of perimenopause, early menopause, or simply the profound realizations that come with reaching a milestone age, you're not alone. This period of life transitions can create deep stirrings and reflections on life, work, relationships, and purpose, often leading to feelings of uncertainty yet the longing for change.

The shift from perimenopause into menopause can unsettle things you thought were stable. You may notice changes in your mood, your energy, your sleep, or your physical appearance. You may notice increased irritability or reactivity, at your family, at your job, at the smallest things. You may feel less able to tolerate roles or routines that used to fit, and start wondering who you are becoming and what you actually want.

This important journey through midlife isn't just about the physical and emotional changes, and the management of symptoms, it's a pivotal journey of emotional and spiritual introspection and transformation. The journey may include questions like-"what do I need for my overall well-being and healing; what's next, or how can I live my next chapters with intention, purpose, or joy?" It's normal to feel both paralyzed by these questions and exhilarated by the possibilities they present.

Imagine a therapeutic partnership that meets you right where you are, acknowledging that the menopause transition might be a marker, but that the real journey is deep healing of the past, and exploring what life will look like moving forward. Perimenopause and menopause counseling or therapy, offers a grounded space to slow down and shed the burdens that have weighed you down, make sense of what is changing, and embrace the freedom to craft your best decades ahead.

What Brings Women In

Many women come to menopause counseling or therapy for different reasons. Some are dealing with anxiety that shows up as overwhelm or panic, worry about aging parents or growing children, or a sense of being paralyzed by questions they can no longer put off. Others notice a flatness or heaviness, a loss of the energy they used to count on. Sleep can become unreliable, and fatigue can settle in and stay. Irritability may surface too, not just crankiness, but something closer to an unwillingness to keep absorbing everyone else's expectations. And often there is grief, about time passed, choices made, or a version of yourself that feels harder to locate.

Many women notice that menopause and perimenopause affect mental health as much as their physical health: a low mood, anxiety, a dip in self-esteem, sleep disruption, and a sense that daily life is harder to manage than it used to be. None of that means something is wrong with you. Life transitions like this one can affect your overall well-being in ways that are often under explored, and they deserve spaciousness and support to navigate the depths.

What would it mean to actually look at menopause beyond menopausal symptoms to be managed, but as a threshold, an initiation that marks the end of one stage of life and the beginning of another. Like all meaningful rites of passage, it has the capacity to reshape your emotional self, your identity, and your sense of purpose.

Common Menopause and Perimenopause Symptoms

Menopause symptoms and perimenopause symptoms show up differently for everyone, but the physical side of this transition is real for most women. These are some of the most common symptoms I hear about: hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, rage, irregular periods, brain fog, memory lapses, and other menopausal symptoms that often show up alongside the emotional changes, and one can make the other harder to sit with. I am not a medical provider, so for medical treatment options, a conversation with your skilled healthcare provider is worth having alongside our work together. What I can offer is a place to process how all of it is landing for you, physically and emotionally, at the same time.

Approaches I May Use in Perimenopause and Menopause Counseling

Perimenopause and menopause can bring physical changes alongside shifts in mood, sleep, stress tolerance, identity, relationships, and your sense of yourself. To support you through this transition, I draw from a range of therapeutic approaches based on your individual needs, concerns, and goals. Our work moves at a pace that makes sense for you and may include processing unresolved issues, grief, regrets, anxiety or depressive symptoms, or trauma; supporting nervous system regulation and emotional well-being; reconnecting with your body; or exploring questions about identity, meaning, and what this next stage of life may be asking of you.

Depending on what feels most helpful, I may incorporate:

  • Talk therapy to process unresolved issues, grief, regrets, difficult life experiences, and emotions that may be surfacing during the menopause transition.

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to better understand patterns of thought and behavior and to help manage anxiety, depressive symptoms, and other emotional challenges.

  • Somatic and body-centered therapy to support nervous system regulation and stress tolerance, particularly when physical and emotional changes feel overwhelming. This work can also help you reconnect with your body, process unresolved trauma, and become more attentive to the information and inner wisdom your body may hold.

  • Mindfulness-based and compassion practices to support awareness, acceptance, and a kinder relationship with yourself as you navigate change.

  • Guided inner practices, including guided imagery, hypnotherapy, and drum journeys, as avenues for exploring important questions and connecting with your internal wisdom and guidance.

  • Emotional inquiry to explore an emerging identity, changing roles or relationships, questions about meaning and purpose, and what your soul may be calling for in this stage of life.

  • Creative expression, including art or movement, to support emotional expression and access feelings, insights, and inner wisdom that may be difficult to reach through words alone.

  • Education and practical support to help you find appropriate practitioners to support your physical health and to explore supportive lifestyle changes related to rest and sleep, exercise, and nutrition.
